I use a belt for squats when I am getting ready for a competition and getting into weights that I don't normally handle. I don't think belts are necessary for weights that you normally handle if you are a person who focuses on what they are doing and uses / maintains good form. I think belts and wraps help more as a phychological aid to help you focus on correct form. At least for me it does. I don't use a belt to deadlift but that's because I carry too much abdominal fat and it is difficult to get down to a deadlift bar and breathe with a belt on. I did use one year ago when I dieted down to around a slim 320 lbs.

I use belt for heavy squats and deadlifts, but I admit it was M.T. Neal who helped me learn how to use a belt. Itís there to have something to push against when you swell up with air just before lifting the weight, itís about internal pressure. Or thatís how I think about it.

The mind and the body are interrelated: what you do to one necessarily effects the other. There must be a balance between the two. If your body is strong but your mind is weak, you are a powerful instrument with no direction; such an instrument rarely produces good. If your mind is strong but your body is weak, then you may be filled with purpose and good intentions but have no strength necessary to act on your impulses. You must strengthen your mind to control your body; and strengthen your body so you can always follow the good directions of your mind.

absolutely, pushing against it causes internal pressure that helps to keep you tight and stable. I think you can do similar without the belt but the belt helps alot, physically and mentally.

I agree! I wear a belt all the time for the most part habit developed. Although I wear a belt my abs and back receive their own fair share of a workout to avoid neglecting those areas. Well said Big Neal!!

I use one when I squat as I have a couple of damaged disc's in my lower back, on the days I'm not squatting I don't use one as I don't deadlift or do any bentover rowing

I dont use one on a regular basis but heck I'm a girl and the most I lift is no where near what y'all are talking about!! But I have used one when I did squats the day after a brutal lower back workout only because I did feel it supported my spine. I felt funny wearing one and I needed more holes in the belt to make it even fit tight enough. Should a woman wear one to for squats etc?

When lifting really heavy I definitely recommend one in most cases. One thing I've noticed so far over the past couple of years My core has gotten better not using one all the time. Now. I still have had the back problems but not because "not" using a belt.

But I still believe if you do dead lifts you better be wearing a belt.

HAha! You'd be the only serious chick in your gym

They are adjustable so my guess would a small for you. I suggest looking into the belts made by Altus. Very good affordable belt.

Nike makes belts as well but they don't seem to offer good back support.

Cardillo belts are top quality but cost pretty penny.
