Default HELP PAPAW GET READY FOR A BB COMPETITION NEXT YEAR - 05-26-2010, 02:02 PM

I AM FROM A POWERLIFTING BACKGROUND SO BODYBUILDING IS NEW TO ME. I DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT I'M DOING AS FAR AS POSING, MUSIC, ROUTINES..ETC. THE DIET I THANK RICK FOR BEING THE DIET GURU. I HAVE LOST 12 POUNDS SO FAR.
I KNOW IT'S HARD TO STRESS HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE ALL OF THE ENCOURAGMENT AND TIPS YOU GUYS PASS ALONG. I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW " I REALLY DO APPRECIATE YOU GUYS !"
I AM REAL NERVOUS ABOUT STANDING OUT IN FRONT OF PEOPLE WITH NOTHING BUT A SWIMSUIT ON. ALSO I WANT TO LOOK BIG ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO BE UP THERE.

You can do this brother, it's never to late to start. As for music you got time, posing is tough you can never start that to soon! Routine I just watch endless hours of youtube, and ask tons of people advice. I'm with you on the whole standing in front of a crowd practically naked, but hey it comes with the territory and you won't be the only one there wearing a bikini bottom so it's all good.

Hey Papaw! I'm glad to see you post this! We'll help you along the way and I know Matt will be willing to help as well since he's been there. Keep pounding the weights and eating well and it will get you closer to your goal. Matt is also the one that will need to chime in to finally get your final 2-3% of BF down.

One thing I will say though, is that I think we need to get some deadlifts and or rack pulls in there to get your back where it needs to be. You don't need to go super heavy right now. Treat it with baby steps. Some will argue squats are the best lift, but I'm in the deadlift camp But truly, they are both great lifts.

I DID SOME LEG PRESS IS THAT CLOSE OR THE SQUAT MACHINE (THAT'S THE ONLY WAY I KNOW HOW TO DESCRIBE IT) THEY DON'T HAVE SQUAT RACKS PERSE, JUST THE SMITH MACHINE AND THE SQUAT MACHINE.
I HATE TO SOUND LIKE A DUMMY BUT WHAT ARE RACK PULLS ?

Leg press can work for legs, but not sure it's equal to the squat in quality. Not sure about he squat machine but any of these are better than not doing them. Just don't go super heavy out of the gate. Go moderate at most and slowly work up.

Rack pulls: Notice her back. Nice form here imo:

Yeah shes got form down alright.

Way to go on setting yourself a good goal papaw! Lets really get this routine and diet down so that you can come in ready to rock!

I would forget about the music right now, but not so much posing... just flexing in general is great for bodybuilders, people think that flexing/isometrics is vain or showing off but it is actually very beneficial for muscle growth and improving the mind-muscle connection.

I agree 100%. Plus what it will do if you do it repetitively in the mirror is develop muscle memory or feel for the pose. So you will no longer need the mirror to know you are doing it right. I'm not at expert on this, but I mirror pose a good bit just seeing how I look

I'VE BEEN TALKING TO A COUPLE OF GUYS ABOUT BICEP GROWTH. ONE SAYS THAT USING CABLES IS USELESS AND I WON'T GET ANY SIZE USING CABLES. ANOTHER GUY THAT IS A COMPETING 51 YEAR OLD SAYS THAT HE USES CABLES AND HAS GOTTEN MOST OF HIS SIZE FROM USING THEM.
WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ?

You can still get bicep growth from just doing the basics. the best growth builder hands down is still straight bar curls or EZ bar curls if your wrists don't like the straight bar curl. Most of your definition is going to come from your diet and cardio anyway.

Believe it or not Dead lifts are another great exercise for biceps and pretty much all heavy back work because the main function of the bicep is for pulling.
