One of the more frequent questions I get asked in the gym (by new members) is "How hard should I push myself?" I tell them that the answer lies within the definition of the goals that they have set for themselves. By this I mean, if you want to just loose a little weight - you may not have to push yourself all that hard, and the diet may be the hardest thing to contend with here.

Then there are the guys that want to get big (or bigger that are hard gainers) - what do I tell them? Well, like all good things, nothing good is free, and there are some physical costs to getting big or strong. Some of these guys fear "getting hurt" while others are fearless - neither of these is preferable when trying to get big or strong. The guy that is fearless will attempt heavier weights than he is ready for and will often sacrifice good form for poundage and will eventually get hurt - while the person who fears getting hurt will not push themselves beyond a "comfortable" weight and they will eventually get frustrated with weight lifting all together.

There is a point where these two different mannerisms cross - and that intersection is a crucial point of success in weight lifting or body building and it's called the wall of pain. The wall is the place where your body decides it's had enough and wants to rack the weight before hitting your reps - and you mind is soon to follow. The person who fears getting hurt will not go beyond the wall, and the person who is fearless pays no attention to its warning signs. Think of "the wall" as your internal guide to pain.

Overcoming the wall is different for each person - first, you have to really want to overcome it and second you should have a spotter there when you do. Your mind will play tricks on you, and tell you you have nothing left - some days it's true (lack of sleep maybe) but some days, your body CAN do it, it just doesn't want to - this is where the last two reps really count and you will be happy you did them and equally dejected if you didn't.

So if you set out to do ten reps - do ten. If you set out to do a triple - do it. Your spotter will be there to help you out if you need a little help. Obviously - the wall is not to be conquered on a day you get five hours of sleep - and most importantly set your weight/rep goals REALISTICALLY prior to your workout. If you find that a weight is too light, or you could eek out another rep on your next set, these minor adjustments can be made on the fly - but try to stick to the numbers as best as you can.

As far as the guy who pays no attention to the walls warning signs? Please don't be him - if you feel "unhealthy" pain in joints or muscle tissue - or you realize that you have no form whatsoever - do yourself a favor and lower the weight, and do it right - surgery really does suck.

Hey Little Guy,

All good things come to those who wait - and have the nads to see it through to the end (I modified the "ol" saying). If you work hard, eat right, and get the right amount of rest - you WILL grow. You may be limited on the amount you will grow by genetics - but you will grow none-the-less. Fight the good fight my friend and you will succeed!
