When I run, mostly towards the end of my 3 miles I get this pain on the inside of both my calves, not quite the back but not my shin either. Know where I am talkin about? Its not a cramp but not a sharp pain either. Not enough to make me wanna stop but enough to let me know it hurts.

Could this be shin splints? or is it just me being out of shape? this is only my second week of running like this. But last week my feet would go numb, now there is no numbness but this pain. call it progress or a problem?

Thanks for the input guys

You run 3 miles and that's all that hurts? :D

Just kiddin'....but really I'd say it's too early to tell. That really is a long run for someone just getting back into it.

I used to run it EVERY Day man, EVERY DAY, Maybe I am pushing too hard but Seriously, Other than the pain in my calves I feel Great. Now I am only running at about 6mph too, So maybe call it a jog which makes it worse. LOL I had my 3 miles down to 25 minutes at my peak. it was awesome now I got all these aches and pains. I don't know what to make of it.

How long ago was "used to run"?

...and 8+ minute miles on a 3 mile run? That is some pretty serious running!

Used to run = last July when I was 180, Then the car wreck now I am 250. Well as of today I am 235 Yeehaw. But Yeah Takes me 30 to 35 mins to do 3 miles at the pace I go now. But back in July when I hit the 180 make. Yeah 25 MIN AND 38 SEC WAS MY BEST WITH A 1/8 MILE HILL AT THE END. Now I am coming in at 30 to 35 mins on the same run.

I don't think it is shin splints unless you are really feeling it on the front.

It may be some swelling in the Achilles Tendon. Not much for that just to keep it strectched. and massage it. I have that same problem.

Yeah, I stretched for like 10 mins yesterday before my run, It helped. So maybe its just that. Boy did it hurt last night though when I went to bed

stretching before you run is actually a bad idea. a specific warm-up including walking lunges, butt-kickers, high-knees and the like will get your muscles ready to work. stretching essentially tells your muscles that they're done. i'm not talking about the pre-stretch you get during a lift, but the long, static stretches that should be saved for after you workout.

further, like mac said, you'll feel shin splints specifically in the front. if it only hurts when your using the muscles of your calf, it's tissue strain. like he said, massage it out, try ice for a 2 days, then heat, and give the calves a break. if the pain is persistant even when your just sitting down, that's something more serious, such as shin splints (which I believe we've managed to rule out)

Good call. I was getting around to telling him about not doing static strecthes before his run but I got busy here at work. Thanks.
