When doing barbell bicep curls, are you supposed to go all the way down and have your arms perpindicular to the ground or are you supposed to leave your arms at a 135 degree angle?

Going all the way down will give you a full range of motion.

I've always heard that you do NOT want to go all the way down, and that locking out your elbow is very bad for the joint. When I do my curls, I never lock out and keep my elbow very slightly bent. Any thoughts?
well, i go all the way most of the time....it strengthens the bicep at the starting point. the hard part is goin from straight to up....just keep control of the weight, form is important....

There are 2 ways to look at this. Do you want overall size in the peak or do you want this exercise to build the whole arm.
Peak size= Preacher Bench.
Over all arm size= Standing bicep curls. However if you wish you can do them both ways. You will get more on the bar as far as weight and overall growth the heavier you go. Heavy sets without full range, Lighter sets with full range. That will do you fine.

Also suppination of the wrist is important for a good peak to the bicep for those that are blesse with that type of Bicep.

Preacher curls is where some might want to be careful. If you feel excess stress on your elbows when reaching full extension on preachers, you may want to avoid them all together. The whole point of the preacher is to get that full ROM.
If preachers aren't an option, do incline DB curls. Thats another exercise that will go through an extreme ROM.

I love incline DB curls I get a great range of motion and do not feel any pain or stress in my elbow.
