Hi first of all. I'm new here but I wanted to add another subject matter that seems to be over looked a great deal. Maybe cause this is my line of work but I think its vital for people to also know as another "means" to toning and weight lose on a healthy level.
Does anyone consider massage as part of your fitness? Honestly, i'm not going to pretend I know everything when it comes to training but with all the massive working out, diet pills, certain eating habits, people dont tend to focus on the muscle groups and what they need to work fully. I dont know how many people I've seen that have torn and or ripped a muscle from working out and don't tend to think of the repercussions of the full muscle as a whole. When a person works a bicep, the center of the muscle is used more so then to connection points of the muscle itself, hence sometimes not getting the full results all the way through. A lot of women tend to get annoyed with this cause if they work out, they want to see it!
Its also proven that massage elongates, serves as a means for proper blood flow and removal of toxins that cause muscles to lack proper motion to do what you guys fully need them to do. It also tones/tightens which in turn adds more effectivness to your work out.
Its just a topic of discussion and I'm curious to see who REALLY takes care of there body, the right ways.
Thanks for your time ^_^

First off welcome to IPYU :D. Me personally I have not been to a massage therapist before, I have wanted to but just never gone.

I think that some lifters believe it is necessary/beneficial. I know Jay Cutler had regular massage therapy. Good question.
BTW, welcome to IPYU.

Welcome to Ipyu,
Great question on a new topic..
Absolutly massage theropy is benificial to muscle growth as well as stretching.
Over the years many of artices in all of the pro magazines advocate the use of massage theropy and stretching to encourage muscle growth and conditioning.
I have had massages done and you feel like a million bucks when they are done.
There is a cost to it, thou very expensive for a good massuse, worth every penny;)
As a gift for wife I purchase her a full body and hot rock massages while I prefer the deep tissue better.
To limit cost, local collages offer massage theropy as a course curriculum and one can get a pretty good massage from a beginer for about 25.00-50.00. Keep in mind that you may be there for a longer time as instructor is teaching and student is learning, but I like it because you get more for your money.
Did you go to collage for massage theropy or take a private course??

i goto a chrio once a week for good measure, and every other friday is massage therapy (other is adjustments =x) but i dont see it being a critical part of body building.
i do take a sauna everyday and IMO that is the fountain of youth

WoW, what a great response and thank you all for sharing your inputs on this subject matter and the warmest of welcomes! I'm glad to see that some ~hopefully many more after reading this~ have consider this or other means to keeping the muscles in the best shape they can.
JT, I went to school in Indiana to become a Massage Therapist. Becamed Licensed when the law passed. best thing the state of IL could have ever done! Thank you for asking ^_^
i hope all is well with everyone!

Welcome to IPYU.
I am a firm believer in massage therapy. I try to get one at least every 6 weeks. If I could get them done sooner I would.
I definitely believe in the removing toxins from the body. Flushing out the toxins with a good massage and and then drinking a lot of water really replenishes my muscles and makes me feel much better.
I feel the body needs to flushed on a constant schedule to get rid of unwanted toxins in our food. Now that does not mean I believe one should be taking coffee enemas or any other of those extreme measures of detoxifying the body but detoxifying the body can be done with diet as well throughout the day by not putting so much stress on the digestive system.
I am going off track here but, this is a great topic.
Thanks for starting this and looking forward to seeing more of your posts.

Personally, I've done a lot of research into massage therapy and it's relation to recovery, but there's a lot of contradicting evidence. Unfortunately, the only studies that have been conducted (that I've found) have only been short term (6 weeks or less) studies and therefor the long-term benefit is unknown.
Although there doesn't seem to be clear-cut and concise scientific evidence, I haven't counted it out. There are many people that I know who do get regular massages , and every one of them is a big advocate for it. From injury prevention to muscle recovery, it is touted as a great aid in caring for your body.
With that being said, I've never had a massage , but that's not due to lack of interest. I just can't afford it. It's actually on my to-do list.

Do you have any advice on choosing a good massage therapist?

Yeah, I do know Ryan hehe Known him since we were kids! ~YIKES~
I think stating the short term against massage was a good thing to share also. I know a lot of people have doubts when it comes to it, a lot of people I know personally dont have enough infomation on it.
It's good to see a good response in this subject matter. I dont know how many people really lack the know how of fitness, its good to chat with others that have an interest in it!
Happy Turkey day to everyone! ^_^
P.S Thank you all for the cont. welcoming, super nice of you guys!

on a serious note, this is a great idea to bring up. alot of lifters ignore stretching, so I'm sure an equal if not greater number ignore the importance of massage. Aside from the removal of toxins, the removal of knots and stress would speed up recovery.
When a boss of mine turned my eye to using a foam roller, I was amazed at not only how much better I felt, but how my performance improved. Now if a message therapist had done the work instead, I could only imagine the benefits!

Your muscle feel loosen up cause the heat of the bulbs is causing your body to pump blood flow faster through out. Its the same concept as standing in a hot shower, however in your case, altering the skin tone! :)
Thank you for the welcome also SL, I think most people would do the same thing if we could afford it all the time! ^_^
thanks to kristin i thought i should try it out and all i have to say is my back feels ten times better Thanks
